Pet peeves (3)

People who confuse the following two words:

A fundamental truth; a comprehensive law or doctrine, from which others are derived, or on which others are founded; a general truth; an elementary proposition; a maxim; an axiom; a postulate.
A leader, chief, or head; one who takes the lead; one who acts independently, or who has controlling authority or influence; as, the principal of a faction, a school, a firm, etc.

It is especially galling to get a letter from the local school district that, with the signatures of 4 principals at the bottom, spells it incorrectly in the last paragraph. Come on, people!

Oh, right, parenting

Two days ago A was apparently trying to find the website for his favourite soft drink. Nothing wrong with that, you’d think. His favourite soft drink is a diet drink (by necessity, most regular soft drinks contain corn syrup, which has to avoid) by the name of Diet Squirt.

The Firefox browser we provided for him has the default Google start page with the (default) preference setting Use moderate filtering. I had initially assumed Google’s defaults would be good enough, but now I see that this setting only filters images, nothing else.

So A, fairly innocent boy that he is, types something in the Google input field to find a website for his drink. Sure, no problem there you would think?

Right, except that he types in squirter.com (hope you weren’t drinking anything right as you read that), and follows the very first link that turns up in the results. Ouch! An indication of his innocent mindset is that he goes “Ewww”, and quickly closes the window!

One of the first things we did (after first verifying what exactly happened; proxy logs are helpful with that, as is the fact that browsers keep track of what you’ve entered into input fields) was to make sure both kids have their Google preferences set to strict but in the end the best thing we can do is make sure there is always someone vaguely keeping an eye on what they’re doing online. I refuse to set up some sort of cyber nanny, if we have to resort to anything of that sort I’d prefer to just set up a list of allowed sites, instead of the other way around.

On the plus side, at least I am not facing up to 40 years in prison because of this.

Ever had something like this happen around you?

Kodak Moments

Supposedly this was originally intended for internal use at Kodak only, but it was so popular they let others share:

Over 100,000 views when I saw it, so it appears to have gone viral. 🙂

Line Rider

Apparently I’ve missed out on some great big internet fun involving a flash application called the Line Rider where you create a line-drawing and let a figure in a wheelchairsled ride slide on those lines. It can be very simple, or you can go completely overboard, like this

And there are quite a few more of those when you search with linerider as keyword.

Have fun sinking too much time into that. 😉

Update: This version is much more fun, and much more addictive. Uh oh…

At N‘s and A‘s school they have an award called OSCAR, handed out when someone has been well-behaved, so to speak. Of course they couldn’t leave well enough alone and made it an acronym, with this meaning:

Today N pointed out to us that there’s a word hidden in there:

Hmm… 🙂

iWoz: From Computer Geek to Cult Icon: How I Invented the Personal Computer, Co-Founded Apple, and Had Fun Doing ItI picked it up last Saturday and am (slowly, one lunch break at a time, so to speak) reading it at the moment. Enjoying it so far. Wozniak’s sense of humour can be quirky at times but he’s such a geek that it’s easy to accept the times where I don’t think it’s as funny as he does. 😉

Looks to me like Britney is playing copy-cat here:

But I don’t think she could ever get close to the original, do you?

Thunderbird Logo … is Thunderbird‘s spell-checker complaining about the word Thunderbird?

Tsk. 🙂

Linkage (45)

Alky is an open source project that aims to translate Windows binaries into OS X or Linux binaries. Although it isn’t mentioned explicitely on any of their pages as far as I could find, it’s limited to x86 (Intel). (Dworkin was curious enough to glance through the source code and figure that out.)

Are you an active LiveJournal user? Do you have a sense of humour? Ok, then read this and have a chuckle. 🙂

Google SketchUp is bloody addictive! A pity it won’t install on Win98, or I’d let the oldest kid play with it; he looked quite interested in it when I showed him some basics.
