What the hell?
I’d been using a beta version (2.1.1b2) for a while and wondered if there had been any news on that front. I double-checked that there were no entries I’d overlooked in the RSS feed of the NetNewsWire Beta forum on NewsGator’s website.
Curiously, I decide to check the actual webpages for a change and notice that unlike what the RSS feed indicates, there are at least one or two posts after August 6. In fact, there’s a newer beta (2.1.1b4), which I immediately download and run. Backups, what backups? I trust Brent.
Then for reasons I don’t recall I decide to browse to the top level of the forum and notice that the forum is marked read-only because 2.1.1 has been released, with a referral to an announcement in a different NewsGator forum. Strange that there was no posting saying so in the forum itself, and no post on Ranchero or Inessential.com, where I’d have expected a mention on at least one of them. What’s more, most of the pages on Ranchero still refer to NetNewsWire 2.1!
The release has been over a week ago, but MacUpdate and VersionTracker both list 2.1.1b1 as the most recent release of sorts.
What gives, who is dropping the ball here?
Update: See comments; It was Brent being so busy with 3.0 that he forgot to properly announce the new version.

Unfortunately the latest version of the forum software that we use at NewsGator has had some problems with the forum level RSS feeds. We have created an all-encompassing feed that contains entries from all forums here.
We are working with the company who makes the forum software to get this corrected as soon as possible.
Since Ranchero has been acquired by NewsGator, you can always find the latest full release (not beta) on the NetNewswire Product Page.
Unfortunately we don’t push saftware to MacUpdate and VersionTracker, they update via their own schedule, so it’s possible they ran across the same problems as you
Brent is working overtime on adding some fantastic new features for NetNewsWire 3.0 (Check the super-early sneak peak version.) so he may have overlooked posting about 2.1.1 - I’ll remind him to get a post out!
Edited by Erwin: Fixed link to NNW Product Page.
Glad to hear something is being done to fix that and thanks for the response.
It’s me dropping the ball.
I’ve been working so hard on 3.0 that I just plain spaced on making the 2.1.1 announcements on my weblogs.
Thanks for the explanation. I’m looking forward to 3.0 as I’ve always preferred the combined view but with the number of feeds and history that I keep around it’s just too slow to be practical.
Thanks for letting MacUpdate know, in a really-round about way. I’ve updated the listing to beta 2 on MacUpdate. I wish Brent were still small…..things were way more simple then. Not the aligator has taken over! :/
Doesn’t everybody subscribe to RSS feeds of references to their own website/software?
I sort of assumed Brent would, after his response, update his website or blog and MacUpdate, VersionTracker and others would pick it up from there, but I guess he’s even busier than that.
