I don’t think Thunderbird uses an internal spell checker at all. More likely it is using some external spell checker it finds on your OS.
Have a look at this page, you may change your mind.
Hrm. I still think Thunderbird at least CAN play with e.g. aspell.
I’ll have to look it up one of these days.
