Awake yet? (6)

Sipping coffee from my Mind The Gap mug today, in a vague gesture to the people that died or were injured yesterday.

As far as I can tell any friends or acquaintances in and around London are alive and well, so that’s the good news. The not so good news is that the death toll has risen from around 30 to over 50 (BBC News), now.

In unrelated news, Scientology dropped copyright case in the Netherlands:

A day before the Dutch Supreme Court was to deliver its final verdict, the Church of Scientology has dropped its controversial case against writer Karin Spaink, who hyperlinked to what the church believe is copyrighted material. However, Spaink wants the case to continue, as it will establish a freedom of speech precedence for the internet and ISPs in particular.

This case has been dragging on for about 10 years now, it would indeed be nice to see a real finish that might set a precedent of sorts and not an aborted fight which (I assume) would allow them to do this all over again to other victims.

If you are like me (vaguely) following the SCO vs. IBM case, don’t hold your breath on it being wrapped up anytime soon (The Register):

A five-week jury trial will now begin on Feb. 26, 2007, as a result of a recent ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Dale Kimball. As the case hobbles to trial, SCO will now also have a chance to depose IBM’s CEO Sam Palmisano in this dispute over whether or not bits of Unix owned by SCO illegally made their way into Linux thanks to IBM. The previous trial date, already delayed twice itself, was Nov 1.

Good. Effing. Grief!

While P2P technology is under fire elsewhere, browsers are adding BitTorrent support (CNET):

Norwegian Web browser company Opera released a new test version of its software Thursday that supports the BitTorrent peer-to-peer technology, one of the most popular tools in the file-swapping world.

Not far behind is an independent project aimed at providing BitTorrent support for the widely used Mozilla Firefox Web browser, although that has yet to release software publicly.

Something else to look at Sometime Soon ™.
