Tomorrow we’re off to get the car to the nearest Mazda garage. Our luck is that it’s a 2 hour drive from where we live. That probably explains why we don’t see very many vehicles around here of that particular brand. The fact that we have one is a longer story than you’d think or I want to explain. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, basically a heads-up you won’t see much content from me tomorrow, or Thursday, when we hope to be able to drive back up to the same place to pick it back up.

iTunes 4.9 & Podcasts (2)

Some notes:

  • It seems that iTunes doesn’t like to subscribe to a feed while a download is in progress. That, or the iTMS was overloaded while I was attempting this. Can’t explain the 502 error I got, otherwise.
  • The Coverville feed does not work, when I click on the exclamation point I get:

“Coverville” does not seem to be a valid Podcast URL.

Please check that you have entered the correct URL and try again.

Err, except that I didn’t enter any URL, and I’d love to be able to but simply haven’t ran into any place that lets me (I certainly hope I’m not totally blind to it somehow).

  • I couldn’t find the Tartan Podcast, so now I’m wondering if that is because nobody has bothered to add his feed yet, or if Apple considered his content problematic for whatever reason.
  • I very much like that iTunes uses bookmarks for the podcasts so you can interrupt them, play something else, and resume without having to search for the point where you left off.

Oh. Good. Grief. I just found it. Under Advanced select Subscribe to Podcast and off you go. *blush* Putting in the correct Coverville RSS feed and adding the Tartan Podcast right now and I’m a much happier camper already. Carry on, nothing to see here. πŸ˜‰

iTunes 4.9 & Podcasts

It would appear that the iTunes podcast subscription list is kept elsewhere. At least I did not find it when grep-ing through my home-directory. So there are two options:

  1. Apple is 100% dictating what podcasts you are or are not allowed to subscribe to, by forcing you to go through their podcast directory and storing your subscription lists on their server, associated to your iTunes account.
  2. I missed something because the data is stored in something other than plain text.

I’m leaning towards option 2 because I was never prompted for my iTunes account password, but then where is it hiding?

No doubt others will do similar checks, so I’ll keep an eye out for that and update this post when I see something useful. You’re also welcome to comment with additional info if you have it. πŸ™‚

It would appear that vitamin C isn’t the cold cure (NewScientist.com) that I grew up thinking it was:

Regular doses of vitamin C will not prevent a cold in most people – though they might reduce its duration slightly, according to a major new review of existing research.

The idea that the vitamin can prevent and treat a cold became popular following the 1970 publication of Nobel laureate Linus Pauling’s book, Vitamin C and the Common Cold. “Pauling’s book was very influential. But I’m confident that the general population doesn’t stand to gain any great benefit in terms of colds from taking regular doses,” says Robert Douglas of the Australian National University in Canberra, who co-authored the review.

I’m going to assume that orange juice still is a fairly healthy substance and keep on drinking it, though (and yes, I realize OJ isn’t the only thing containing vitamin C).

Apple released iTunes 4.9 (Playlistmag.com), now with podcast support:

Apple on Tuesday released iTunes 4.9, a new version of their digital music jukebox and music download store software for Mac OS X and Windows. The new release features the ability to browse and subscribe to β€œpodcasts” β€” radio-style shows that you can download over the Internet and listen to either in iTunes or using an Apple iPod.

I’ll be downloading that shortly and see if I like their approach. Right now I’m using NetNewsWire‘s support for downloading enclosures but I’m not 100% happy with its cooperation with iTunes even if part of the problem is my own, using an NFS mount to store its tracks (which works fine when playing tracks but when adding new ones it seems to be fairly unhappy).

Ah, it’s summer (concordmonitor.com):

A flammable liquid accidentally thrown on an outdoor fireplace grill caused a backyard explosion that sent five people, including an 8-year-old boy, to the hospital, fire officials said. The injuries were not serious.

Got to the computer this morning and found (after reloading the pages) a few unhappy WordPress pages, apparently caused by one of the (harddisk) partitions filling up a bit too far. This same partition filling up also caused email to be held back, but only on the firewall mailserver, nothing bounced as far as I know.

Sadly I have no idea how long this has been going on, but I guess between 4-12 hours somewhere.

Sorry if it inconvenienced anyone out there. πŸ™‚
