Mythical coolness

After seeing the introduction to MythTV on the second Systm episode, I realized that with all my homebrew fiddling, I would never be able to get anywhere close to such a polished setup, and surrendered.

A day later I’ve got 0.18.1 installed on my server, figured out why I had no audio initially (MythTV defaults to the line input and I’d been using the mic input all this time; no idea why that had been the case, no), and am experimentally running the OS X build of the 0.18.1 frontend that is intended for Tiger (10.4) but seems to work alright with Panther (10.3) so far.

I’d also downloaded and burned the KnoppMyth ISO image that Systm used for their introduction, but I’ve got the impression that the 0.16 and 0.18 versions of MythTV may not cooperate nicely, so that’s now a fairly useless coaster, unfortunately.

My setup at the moment:

  • Dual P3 (1.4 GHz each) machine with 512 MB RAM.
  • 200 GB HD dedicated to the cause.
  • Pinnacle PCTV card, hooked up to the local cable service.

There’s a Hauppauge card with my name on it that should arrive later this week; that should allow me to delegate most of the work to the card (it does MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 encoding on the card) and deal with overlapping recording schedules, from time to time. It should also provide stereo, while my current card only provides mono.
